Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro, 19,341 feet tall, has three volcanic cones, Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira, and is an inactive stratovolcano. It is located in north-eastern Tanzania and the highest mountain in Africa . Mount Kilimanjaro is considered to be the tallest freestanding mountain in the world, rising 15,100 feet from the base. The exact meaning and origin of the name Kilimanjaro is unknown. The exact origin of the name Kilimanjaro is unknown but is believed to be a combination of two Chagga words, Kilemia, and ngaruo meanining difficult to climb.

The peak of Kibo was first summited by Hans Meyer and Kinyala Johannes Lauwo, a Marangu army scout who served as guide, on 5 October 1889.
